Coroner: Death Cult

17/06/10  ||  InquisitorGeneralis

Why the fuck has no one ever covered “Death Cult” before? It is the first release ever by the mighty Coroner and it features Tom “Gabriel Fisher Price Tonka Satan” Warrior on lead vocals! I am in no way, shape, or form a fan of anything Celtic Frost has done, but maybe I should give the older stuff another listen because Triptykon G. Goofball does a solid job on “Death Cult”. Still, like on every other Coroner album, it is the unfuckwithable triple-team of Royce, Marquis, and Tommy that kicks it from beginning to end. The production is not spectacular but this is a demo from 1986, what the fuck do you expect? This puppy is short so I can give a song-by-song breakdown.

Spectators of Sin: A solid opener with some news footage shit as an intro. As soon as the music kicks in though you know you are in for some action. While not as thrashingly fast as “RIP” or “Punishment for Decadence” the trademark Coroner style of multiple tempo changes, pounding drums, and precision guitars are all here. Warrior’s vocals fit in well and “Spectators of naked women” is a killer, mid-paced opening song.

Spiral Dream: Shorter, heavier, and a bit more hectic than the opener. Fuck, it’s amazing that Coroner was this good even on their first demo. Listen to the breakdown a little over three minutes in and you two will be shocked that they were doing this shit twenty-four years ago.

Aerial Combat: This is a six-minute slab of instrumental awesomeness: on par with any of the instrumentals from their later full-length albums. You get lots of shredding guitars and double bass drumming on this one. Even from their earliest days Coroner’s playing was tighter than a virgin’s vajayjay on prom night.

The Invincible: This is definitely the most interesting song on “Death Cult”. A pretty standard slow-fast-slow-fast structure but still a awesome track featuring some solid riffing by Tommy. There are not many songs that sound like this in the Coroner discography until you get to “Grin”. “The invincipenis” is pretty badass and definitely shows that even from the get-go Coroner was oh-soo-much more than your average group of thrashers.

There you have it: an awesome demo from one of metal’s most creative and original bands featuring an icon from (what I’m told is) one of metal’s other most creative and original bands…minus “Cold Lake” apparently. I already have a titanic and unsoftening hard-on for Coroner so liking the shit out of “Death Cult” is no surprise. More importantly, this is going to motivate me to finally check out some Celtic Frost because I enjoy Tom G-Spot Power Ranger’s vocals here. Satan only knows the dark paths this will lead me down.

For a demo, this is as close to perfect as you are going to get. Normally, I would subtract points for production but not for a self-made demo that totally fucken rocks. Disagree with the following score if you like, I don’t give a flying fuck. This is the most solid demo I have ever heard and clearly the foundation for Coroner’s amazing but way-too-brief career. It even makes me want to listen to Celtic Frost and nothing has ever done that before. I’m done. Domination, penis, touchdown.
